History of Galerie XXL
Beginnings and Founding
Galerie XXL was established in 2003 in Louny as an independent space dedicated to presenting contemporary Czech visual art. From the very beginning, it was built on a simple yet powerful idea: to support talented artists, create a fair environment for the sale of art, and build long-term relationships with collectors.
The gallery’s founder, Ladislav, built a space that gradually became a respected fixture on the Czech art scene—without subsidies, without institutional backing, relying solely on personal drive, professionalism, and trust between artists and collectors.
Exhibitions and Development
Over more than two decades, the gallery has organized dozens of solo and group exhibitions, presented a wide range of renowned Czech painters and sculptors, and become a stable partner for many artists who exhibit here repeatedly.
Gallery XXL has always relied on a personal curatorial approach—the selection of artists is not random but stems from long-term observation of their work, professionalism, and potential. Thanks to this, the gallery has become a place where collectors find a curated selection of contemporary art, not a random catalog.
Auctions and Innovation
In 2008, the gallery expanded its activities to include organizing its own auctions of contemporary art. These auctions were among the first of their kind outside of Prague and introduced a new way to bring high-quality art to a wider audience.
At the same time, the gallery has long drawn attention to the differences between a fair primary market and the speculative environment of some auction houses—and advocates for a transparent, direct relationship between the artist, the gallery, and the collector.
Online Sales and Modernization
XXL Gallery was among the first Czech galleries to begin offering original art online. Gradually, the website became one of the main channels for presenting artists and selling paintings.
In recent years, the gallery has been undergoing modernization—from website updates and the unification of artist presentations to expanding its offerings to include a new generation of artists.
A New Generation
After more than 20 years of continuous operation, the gallery is entering a new phase. The founder’s son is now involved in its management, bringing a fresh perspective, energy, and a keen sense of current trends.
This creates a natural connection between tradition and the new generation—the experience the gallery has accumulated over two decades is combined with a new approach and vision for the future.
Today
Today, Galerie XXL is one of the longest-running private galleries of contemporary art in the Czech Republic. It is built on three pillars:
- Trust – between the gallery, artists, and collectors
- Quality – careful selection of artists and professional presentation
- Continuity – 23 years of uninterrupted activity
The gallery continues to offer original paintings by renowned Czech artists, supports new talent, and remains a place where art is not just decoration, but a long-term investment.
